World’s largest activated carbon manufacturer expands plant capacity in the USA

  • Increases US virgin activated carbon annual production capacity by 25,000 tons
  • World’s largest manufacturer of activated carbon and reactivation, operating from its US based plants, now produces approximately 100,000  tons of virgin activated carbon annually
  • Activated carbon will help tackle emerging contaminants in air and liquid purification 
Calgon Carbon Corporation (“Calgon Carbon”), a wholly owned subsidiary of Kuraray Co., Ltd. (TYO: 3405) (“Kuraray”), announced that it has completed its capacity expansion at its Pearlington, Mississippi site. This expansion includes the addition of a second virgin activated carbon production line, resulting in a significant increase in production capacity. With this expansion, Calgon Carbon and its European operations Chemviron, known as the world’s largest manufacturer of activated carbon and reactivation services, will now produce approximately 100,000 tons of virgin activated carbon per year coming from two US based plants.
The primary purpose of this expanded production capacity is to offer more activated carbon to customers around the world. Our activated carbon plays a vital role in removing harmful contaminants, ensuring cleaner drinking water, safer wastewater treatment and better air purification.
The ribbon-cutting event on 13 October was attended by customers, employees, and members of the Mississippi Development Authority, Hancock County Port and the Harbor Commission.  Kuraray Co. President and Representative Director, Hitoshi Kawahara. President Kawahara emphasized the significance of this expansion, stating, “This expansion will contribute to the improvement of the quality of life by providing products and services of high social and environmental value including PFAS removal.”
