During the manufacturing and processing of acids, activated carbon is used to attain requirements for purity and the removal of impurities, odors, and colors.Using activated carbon on acids and chemicals is important in decolorizing and purifying organic acids and amino acids from processes like fermentation for example.

Specific grades of activated carbon are engineered to function in acidic chemical processes. Select activated carbons are acid washed to remove acid soluble ash in preparation for use in the acidic environments. Acids that are commonly treated are HCl, Phosphoric acid, and Sulfuric Acids.

Examples of organic acids that activated carbon can treat include: Formic Acid, Acetic Acid, Propionic Acid, Succinic Acid, Oxalic Acid, Lactic Acid, Malic Acid, Benzoic Acid.

Granular activated carbon

Specific grades of our Granular Activated Carbons (GAC) are specifically designed for treatment in acid applications.

Reactivation services

Chemviron can offer safe and economical spent carbon handling and thermal reactivation in conjunction with fresh carbon supply and provide personnel and equipment to perform the carbon exchange on a turn-key basis.

Equipment

Chemviron can bundle the performance advantages of activated carbon with equipment (service or purchase) and related services, to provide full turnkey solutions. Many times the equipment will be customized to fit the requirements of the application and customer site requirements. Equipment should be evaluated with each customer to make sure the materials of construction are able to handle their specific acid environment. Thicker linings are usually used as well as special gaskets, and designs for underdrains.
