Many manufacturing processes demand cost effective purification, separation, and concentration of chemical liquids.

With an extensive range of coal, coconut, granular, powdered and high purity acid washed activated carbons, Chemviron has a solution for a host of purification challenges, for industries producing or using liquid chemicals.  Globally, the Calgon Carbon group, including Chemviron, supplies 79 out of the world's top 100 chemicals companies, according to the ICIS 2012 ranking.

If the process is batch or continuous, Chemviron will apply its expertise, through targeted assessment, laboratory and pilot trialling to select the appropriate carbon. Isotherm trials, to provide indicative carbon selection and usage, can be conducted in our extensive laboratories.  For more prescriptive performance information we can supply mobile equipment ranging in size from 20l to 20m3, and indeed supervise pilot and full scale production trials. This information, when evaluated by our experienced Applications Engineers, proves to be invaluable in identifying the most efficient solution for the challenge.

Removal of Colour and/or Colour Forming Compounds

Chemviron has a range of activated carbons proven as successful carbons for use in many liquid chemical decolourisation applications. The range includes cost effective, high quality and reliable activated carbons that have excellent decolourisation performance and ease of use.The inherent properties of our powder and granular activated carbons provide customers with superb performance for colour removal from a range of liquid chemicals including:

  • Adipic acid
  • Diisodecylphtalate
  • Fumaric acid
  • LNG
  • Lubricating oil
  • Maleic acid
  • Melamine
  • Methyl fatty esters
  • Methyl iso butyl ketone
  • Niacin, Nicotinic acid
  • Pentaerythritol (Penta)
  • Perchloroethylene
  • Plasticisers
  • Shellac
  • Stearin
  • Synthetic oils
  • Tannic acid
  • UV Stabilizers

Removal of Corrosive Impurities

Scrubber liquid purification - Amine solvents such as diethanolamine (DEA) are widely used in recirculating loops to remove carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen sufide (H2S) from natural gas. Granular activated carbon (GAC), notably our SGL® grade, is installed to purify the recirculating amine to remove degradation products and dissolved hydrocarbons. Chemviron supplies the Cleanamine range of standard adsorption systems for amine purification.

Some of the benefits of using this technology include:

  • Ensures the gas specifications are met
  • Prevention of amine foaming
  • Reduced corrosion problems
  • Maintains amine efficiency and plant capacity
  • Reduced level of amine consumption

Other solvents that can also be purified for corrosive compound removal include:

  • Benfield solution
  • DEG (diethylene glycol)
  • DGA (diglycolamine)
  • DIPA (diisopropanolamine)
  • Glycol
  • MEA (monoethanolamine)

Removal of Mercury in the Chloralkali Industry

Caustic soda is used extensively in, and is also a by-product from, the chloralkali industry. Mercury cells are used for production of chlorine, hydrogen, and sodium (and in a few plants potassium) hydroxides by electrolysis of a brine solution, and this can cause contamination. Chemviron has a range of steam activated and impregnated carbons that are proven for this application.

Removal of Metal Finishing Residues and Trace Organics

Over a period of time electroplating chemicals become contaminated with organics and metal finishing residues. An effective method of removal is through the use of steam activated carbon, allowing the chemicals to be re-circulated for re-use. Chemviron has a range of steam activated carbons that have been proven to provide superior efficiency in this application.

In addition, activated carbon has also been used for the removal and recovery of chromium in electroplating solutions.

Removal of Organic Matter

A number of liquid chemical products and by-products may also become contaminated by organic compounds. In order to ensure that these products are suitable for sale or re-use, different grades of activated carbon can be used. Chemviron has a range of standard and acid-washed carbons that are suitable for purification of various chemicals including:

  • Alum
  • Cadmium cyanide
  • Hydrochloric acid
  • Lithium
  • Phosphoric acid
  • Phosphorous
  • Soda ssh
  • Sodium chloride (brine solution)
  • Sodium nitrite
  • Sodium tri polyphosphate (STP)
  • Zinc acid, Zinc acid chloride

With an extensive range of coal, coconut, granular, powdered and high purity acid washed activated carbons, Chemviron has a solution for a host of purification challenges, for industries producing or using liquid chemicals.

Activated carbon adsorption can be used to remove a wide range of trace impurities, such as specific organics, TOC, and constituents that impact color, during their manufacturing process. This purification can improve downstream processing or produce a higher-purity/ higher value end product. The list of chemicals purified using activated carbon is immense, and includes acids (hydrochloric, phosphoric), aluminum chloride, liquid hydrocarbons, various intermediates and specialty chemicals.
